If you’re on a real budget travel, you don’t really mind some discomfort brought (most of the time) by common or shared bathrooms, right?  Wrong!

I’m on real budget and I could use a tad comfort at extra cost but a long period of traveling really require some careful stretching of funds, and sometimes you’ll end up with discomforts.  That’s what I got from Churya-a Hotel.

The hotel (more like an Inn) is located along the main road of Bontoc, a couple of minutes walk to the market area at the center of the town.  It’s indeed very central and right in front of the friendly Goldfish Café, and their strong wifi signal reaches the hotel’s balcony.  Don’t bother connecting to the hotel’s wifi, it’s in slow-motion mode and whenever the manager/owner leaves the hotel at night, the wifi connection would be off.

I asked for the cheapest room and I really got a cheap room.  I could’ve opted for the room with ensuite toilet/shower but I’ll be spending only a night in Bontoc to buy new eyeglasses (it’s a holiday so the optical shops are closed), besides, the rate is twice as that of the shared bath.

In essence, the issue is not about the room, it’s an ok room, two single beds with pillows and blankets and an electric fan, a small table with 3 plastic chairs stacked on top of one another.   It’s the bathroom/toilet that is a hassle.

They’re both located on the lobby/restaurant (first) floor, and the rooms are on the second floor.  So every time, I have to go down the stairs at the end of the corridor.  But here’s the real hassle, the toilet/shower is the restaurant kitchen’s toilet, the other one is also the restaurant’s toilet!  Which means that if you take a shower and there are people dining at the restaurant or hanging out there or the staff is cooking at the kitchen and you get out of the shower with your wet hair and towel wrap around your waist, you’ll be a sight to behold!

The staff are friendly though and at P250 for just a couple of nights, I could do without the ensuite bath.  I would suggest getting a room with a toilet/shower for a bit of comfort and convenience.

The food at the restaurant tastes really good and the 3-egg breakfast is filling, and affordable too.

Price: P250 single, shared toilet/shower / P500 single, ensuite.
